Odoo is inexpensive until you need the two things a growing company always needs: your own modules, and API access. Odoo's pricing puts the External API and Odoo Studio on the Custom plan only, and Odoo Online will not host custom modules at all — custom code means Odoo.sh or self-hosting, and the Odoo.sh bill is separate. A custom system on Next.js, TypeScript and PostgreSQL starts where that ceiling is, is headless by construction, and costs nothing per user.
Odoo Community is genuinely open source, both editions share a core, and Odoo states you can switch versions at any time — so an Odoo estate is not the hostage situation a closed suite can be. Odoo also ships a very wide app catalogue for one per-user fee, with unmetered storage up to 100 GB on Odoo Online. For a 10-person company that fits the standard Odoo flows, it is hard to beat on price.

Because extension is where the Odoo price model turns. Custom modules cannot run on Odoo Online, so you move to Odoo.sh or self-hosting and take on the hosting bill and the upgrade work, and Odoo excludes maintenance of custom code from every plan. At that point you are paying a per-user subscription and carrying engineering anyway. A custom system removes the subscription and keeps the engineering — which is the half that produced the value.
Through the same interface your integrations already use. Odoo exposes XML-RPC and JSON-RPC, so we profile the models, map them to normalised PostgreSQL schemas with Drizzle ORM, and run a bi-directional sync while both systems are live. Records, attachments and message history all move across. The one caveat worth planning for is that Odoo puts the External API on the Custom plan, so accounts on Standard need a short plan change to run the export.
Partly, and the distinction matters commercially. Odoo publishes two editions — Community, which is open source, and Enterprise, which is licensed — and states that Community is the core Enterprise is built on and that you can switch versions at any time. So the base is genuinely inspectable, but the Enterprise apps you are most likely paying for are not. Owning the whole stack means owning the parts Odoo keeps.
Small teams whose processes fit the standard apps, and anyone content to run Odoo Community themselves. One fee for a very wide app catalogue is a real advantage and the free tier is genuinely usable. Replacing Odoo pays off when custom modules have become the point rather than the exception, when per-user pricing outruns the value, or when you need a headless API the framework fights you on.

The same page notes the advertised discount is valid for 12 months, for initial users ordered — the headline per-user figure is a first-year rate, not the renewal rate.

Support is email-only, 24/5 Monday to Friday in 4 languages, and Odoo routes companies under 50 employees to Success Packs, mid-size firms to a partner, and companies over 250 employees to Odoo directly.
